For example, let's say Ohio State fan befriends visiting Penn State fan. Ohio State fan reccomends great bar for Penn State fan. Penn State fan meets a girl in the bar, they end up hitting it off and even dating one another. If not for sports, that couldn't have happened. Here's another example, sports can improve a city's economy, simply by bringing in visiting and home fans. Tell a restuarant owner for example that sports don't affect his life and he/she will laugh in your face.

@Kaliske First off, communties rally for sporting events. It kind of simulates the "my country winning a war" feeling without any bloodshed. As a result, it fosters community pride. It brings in new people into the city that normally wouldn't even go to the city, in some cases athletes, in some cases visiting fans. Home fans can befriend the visiting fans who otherwise would have no idea that one another exists. By meeting those people, one's connections could improve.

@Kaliske If you don't understand sports, then don't troll sports videos. If you understood sports, you'd see that a lot of things are different and that it is beneficial not just to the college but the town as well. I'd list the things that improve when a team wins, but I doubt you'd get it. You could also argue that anything for fun has no change on your career, income, etc, but do you want to go there? But then again, I shouldn't take seriously anyone's comments that start and end with "lol".

@Hawkeyeballer12 Well, at the start of 2010, Iowa was thought to be a good team, and for a more dramatic example, everyone thought that Texas was going to be competing for a second straight national title. I put little stock in preseason polls anyway.

Well technically, anything before today is the past, and in the present, I'm waiting for bowl season to start. I'd like to see Penn State smother Florida to bring good momentum into 2010, also I hope Iowa mops up Missouri something like 51-17.

@MVillani1985 At the start of the season PSU was actually thought to be a good team, and also the 27-7 "Smashing" of iowa? Anybody can look in the past to try and argue but what matters is the present.

@cougakid1823 Penn State in 2007 was rebuilding too, we both finished bowl eligible and 4-4 in conference, so with as much as Ferentz has outcoached Paterno over the years, it was surprising that the 2007 game was such a resounding thumping, even if it was at Beaver Stadium (that was not a terrible Iowa team, subpar yes, but terrible no). 2008 was a good upset, I'll give you that. For 2009 and 2010 Iowa is a good team. Speaking of Iowa, I hope the Hawkeyes topple the Buckeyes on Saturday.

@MVillani1985 right they wern't good in 00-04 but iowa wasn't exactially you're typical national powerhouse and in 07-10 the one year you beat us iowa was rebulding we went 6-6 and that year penn state went 9-4

@cougakid1823 Really? Those years where PSU went 5-7, 5-6, 3-9, and 4-7? Those were beyond rebuilding, those were down years. Yes, you beat us those years, but EVERYONE did. 2002 was a good win, but Iowa was a great team that year. 2008 was a legit upset, 2009 both teams were even but Iowa made the big plays. This past year Penn State had no chance. I'm not running down Iowa, just saying that we should look more at 2007-2010. 3 out of 4 is still impressive. But PSU was not good in 2000-2004.

@MVillani1985 who the hell are you? coming in here talkin trash about iowa when penn state lost this year and they've lost what 7 of 9? all of those years penn state wasn't "rebuilding" then, oh and by the way we've got a sophmore running back that's been carrying the load. You wanna talk about rebuilding ok let's talk about how next year's recruiting class every single recruit that is considering iowa is in the espn u 150.
