Paul Terry presents Gandy Goose in "Barnyard Actor," a Terry-Toon cartoon. Color by Technicolor. Story by Tom Morrison. Directed by Connie Rasinski. Music by Philip A. Scheib. Approved by MPAA, certificate no. 05542. Recorded by RCA Sound System. Distributed by Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation.
Gandy Goose brings home a box labeled Home Acting Course, which contains a variety of disguises. He puts on an African mask, which frightens Rudy Rooster out of his bed. He puts on funny glasses and a moustache and waggles a cigar to imitate Groucho Marx. He dons a huge nose to imitate Jimmy Durante. A cowboy outfit enables him to pose as Gary Cooper. A martini and a beret help him pose as Charles Boyer. But his "public" is stolen away by a new rooster in the barnyard. Gandy informs Rudy of this interloper, who is inspiring all the chickens to swoon (shades of the 1944 Warner Bros. cartoon, "Swooner Crooner").
Rudy tries to get tough with the new rooster, but the latter effortlessly slaps him away. Gandy becomes a pseudo-James Cagney to intimidate him, but the rooster easily slaps him away as well.
Rudy grabs a fox costume from the box and tells Gandy to do some useful acting for once: pretend to be a fox attacking the barnyard. That will give Rudy the chance to play the hero. "We'll show up that new rooster!" declares Rudy. But the new rooster overhears.
Gandy is thrilled at the chance to show off his talent and goes off to the woods to practice. But he comes across a real fox, and innocently explains the scheme to him. The fox beats up Gandy, ostensibly to show him how to be tough, and then tells the dopey goose to keep rehearsing. The fox speeds off to the hen house.
The fox meets up with Rudy who, assuming him to be Gandy in disguise, tells him to get busy. The fox promptly chases the chickens about. "Don't worry, girls!" cries Rudy. "I'll save you!" They get into a fight, but Rudy tells the fox that he's overdoing the act. The new rooster intervenes and punches the fox a couple of times. But Gandy walks up with his mask off, and the rooster realizes that the fox is for real.
The fox chases the new rooster away. Gandy dons his mask and tells Rudy he is ready to act. Rudy angrily slaps him down. The chickens see this, and declare Rudy their hero. They carry him off on their shoulders. Gandy, with two black eyes, says, "Huh! Nobody appreciates talent around here!" We fade to black.
