Director of the Dickinson Research Center, Chuck Rand, and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum present "Reese's Pieces: The Art & Life of William F. Reese," an A. Keith Brodkin Contemporary Western Artists Project exhibit in the Atherton Gallery in the Museum.
Born in Pierre, South Dakota on July 10, 1938, William F. Reese characterizes his work as post impressionist with a touch of expressionism. After a near death experience due to peritonitis from a ruptured appendix in 1970, Reese determined to pursue an art career and quit the sign painting business that had sustained his family for years. He began his long association with this museum in 1977 as a guest artist at the National Academy of Western Art Annual Exhibition, now called the Prix de West Exhibition.
Film clips are from an interview with artist William F. Reese in Wenatchee, Washington, on March 27, 2002, as part of the A. Keith Brodkin Contemporary Western Artists Project. The full interview is available for viewing in the Donald C. & Elizabeth M. Dickinson Research Center, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The A. Keith Brodkin Project facilitates the collection, preservation, and accessibility of primary resources such as personal papers, studio ephemera, photographs, libraries, and other items which are often overlooked and lost to posterity and which reflect the artists life and career. Additional resources are acquired through personal oral histories via recorded interviews. Collecting these resources effectively preserves artists careers for posterity and provides future artists, art historians, educators, and researchers with documentary evidence.

William Reese is my uncle by marriage, Fran is my mother's sister. Everett that he mentions is my uncle. I was only 16 in 1971 and didn't even know that he went through this. I wasn't as close to him as I would have liked. After my uncle drowned in the river accident my mother passed away in 1972 which would have also put extra strain on Aunt Fran's family with his him going to painting full time. I will truly miss him and wish I had followed his career more closely. I just found out today

This is something that needs to be seen by everyone who has ever hesitated about doing something they wanted to do out of fear of failure. Life is sometimes surprisingly shorter than you think. Spend it wisely but not timidly.
Thanks Mr. Reese
