Balaton is derived from Slovak Blatno, this is the way how the old Slovaks who lived at Balaton before Magyars, called the lake. In Slovak Blato means MUD. The bottom of the lake Balaton is muddy. Magyars just "stole" the name from Slavs/Slovak who owned that country beforehand. Similarly the Baltic comes from Slavic Blato, MUD.
