Please ask me ANYTHING about music (or magic)!! Sax solo (and lesson) by James Graff at Wildes Irish Cafe in Tartu, Estonia, Europe. The one high note (high concert F...or is it C??) is performed by using a technique I call "fake" altissimo (Italian: "Very high") register playing: you simply touch your lower teeth to the reed and try to find the right spot to sound the note an octave higher (or a fifth or any interval! This is a "harmonic" or "overtone" of the note you are fingering!) - very carefully and gently at first...applying more and more pressure until it is just enough - but never too much pressure as you will damage the reed (in this case it was a 2 1/2 Vandoren...I believe).
You then create vibrato much the same way you do when you play normally - except that forwards and backwards motion can be used (and also creates the potential for a much wider vibrato as the distance your teeth are from the tip of the reed determines the pitch of the "squealed" note.
Also note the very basic Bebop line or theme (that I improvise with and alter) that I got from a Steve Baker book (How to Play Bebop perhaps): 1 7 7b 2 6 5 1 (2 1) 7b

One of the best ways to practice getting good at hitting true altissimo notes ("harmonics" or "overtones") on any sax: finger and play the very lowest note (covering all of the keys/holes) then practice getting the "harmonics" (or "overtones") of that note to sound - without changing the fingering - only with your mouth (mostly try differing lip pressure in different places on the reed!!), throat, air stream and air speed: the octave higher, the fifth above that, the next even higher octave, (you can try hitting ANY harmonic or overtone above that as well! major thirds, minor 7ths, etc.

Harmonic Overtone series: 1st octave, 5th, 2nd octave, Major 3rd, 5th, minor 7th, 3rd octave

Once you have mastered the lowest note gradually move the fingerings up chromatically (one half step at a time) and work on the harmonics and overtones on each of the very lowest notes on your sax.
Next try out and possibly memorize some recommended altissimo fingerings for various notes - for the notes that you might find most useful! And practice, practice, practice!

Please check out my "How to Memorize/Learn" videos and bogs (myspace.com/JamesGraff) that explain that the fastest, easiest and most fun way to memorize is to "translate" what you want to memorize into a funny, ultra-sexy, ultra-violent, emotional "cartoon" (in your mind) that involves all of your senses!! Each note on the staff and each key of the sax becomes a different "character" in the story line - try it!!

Here is the link to a page containing my brief explanation of how best to memorize anything - the Blog entry date is

Tues February 20, 2007 (I still have to make a video - I just had my first baby and have no time - so please be patient...Thanks!):

Wildes Irish Pub

Puupaneelidega varjatud nurgake "snug" ( James Joyce´i portree juures) on ajaloolise iiri pubi diskreetne nurk, kus naised võisid varjatumalt olla muidu nii meestepärases asutuses. Aastate jooksul on pub muutunud tõeliselt demokraatlikuks paigaks, kuhu igaüks, sõltumata soost ja vanusest, võib seltsima tulla.

Iiri pubi kõige demokraatlikum paik on kamina ümbrus.

  • Hey this was really helpful, but im wondering about something. Ive already learned how to create overtones with my lips, and i can make a low Bb two octaves higher, but if i want to get it even higher do i have to cover all the holes and try to get three octaves higher, or is it easier to hold a normal Bb with octave button, and then make the overtone only one octave higher?

  • @d3Iiver In answer to your question: Altissimo register notes are a whole other story: In order to play "altissimo" register notes you have to learn very specific and often quite odd fingerings for each specific note of the scale - and often they are specific even to the particular instrument (some of the alternate fingerings work for one horn and not for another and visa-versa). For this I would recommend googling "altissimo register fingerings" for your (specific) instrument. Does that help?

  • sounds just like adrian from the mars volta :)
