It's easy to make critical remarks about Zizek's talks. Read his books before you pull the chain. As for pyschoanalysis being a waste of time, I point you to Adam Curtis's doco Century of the Self, for an interesting discussion on the influence of pyschoanalysis on society. Whether you agree with it or not, it's working on you right now.

@yanikv Well, of course, if you no first hand experience with psycho-analysis, it's hard to think of a reason why it can be useful, because it's about the sub-conscious.

That would have sucked for those people if he would have won any power. The man is without real ideas or real solutions... just another elite (wholly unaware of hardship or real work) spouting drivel.

@yanikv As for his beliefs, I think he sincerely doesn't believe in most concrete existing socialist ideas and proposals, which is why he ran for president of Slovenia as a right-winger in the early nineties. But he also acknowledges capitalism will lead to disaster. So what he does is challenge underlying beliefs, for lack of concrete measures to propose, and psycho-analysis is an appropriate tool for this.

@yanikv He doesn't aspire to be an analyst of American politics. I can't read his books yet, but my understanding is that his contribution consists in applying psycho-analysis to the macro-level of society and ideology.
