This song gives me the shivers! To think that Duke Ellington wrote this masterpiece for Florence Mills after her death and will never be able to see or hear how amazing she was in the 1920s. There are no recordings (visual or sound) of the Black Beauty that inspired this song.
The mute could be a solotone but I'm not sure. This is from Ellington's first film, Black and Tan, recorded Aug 12-16,1929 according to Stratemann,at RCA Gramercy Studio, New York and with RCA Photophone technology.
The musicians are Ellington, Arthur Whetsel, Freddie Jenkins, Cootie Williams, Joe Nanton, Juan Tizol, Barney Bigard, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Fred Guy, Wellman Braud and Sonny Greer.
WOW I bleedin love this ya'll--- but where is the the rest of the movie short subject this a part of, "Black and Tan Fantasy" where we actually get the chance to see (and hear) the great Duke and his band play that piece, as well as see the actress Freddie Washington? I'd sure love to see that. Keep up the Marvelous work though--- this is INVALUABLE keeping this wonderful stuff alive and preserved for future generations to see. Greatness NEVER dates...

@yomomala It's usually a "Harmon Mute" , but it can be a Cup Mute or even a "Pixie" mute - which is what King Oliver used often.
