American director Edward A. Burger takes us on his unforgettable journey into the hidden lives of China's forgotten Zen Buddhist hermit tradition. "Amongst White Clouds is a look at the lives of zealot students, gaunt ascetics and wise masters living in isolated hermitages dotting the peaks and valleys of China's Zhongnan Mountain range." The Zhongnan Mountains have been home to recluses since the time of the Yellow Emperor, some five thousand years ago. Many of China's most realized Buddhist masters attained enlightenment in this very range!

Wow why are there so many subtitles that are only on screen for one-tenth of a second? It took way to much effort to try and pause the screen for the microsecond in order to read them.

    Once delusion is extinguished

    your wisdom naturally arises...

    and you don't differentiate suffering

    and joy

actually this joy and this suffering

    they are the same

    the same

We can even go so far as to enjoy the pain. Think of a sad movie. Did you suffer while watching it, even though there was sadness? No. You enjoyed it. Why? Because you know it is inconsequential, and you do not 'blame' anyone in earnest for the events that lead to sadness. You can treat your own life in the same way.

You don't have to think about it philosophically. Just practice. It works.

But the philosophy is pretty simple: Our minds take shortcuts. We stub a toe, and then we 'blame' the rock. We pick it up, and toss it like that does any good. But we don't have to. We can simply feel the pain, and see a rock, and not suffer in anger. This does not belittle anything. The rock is still a rock, and your pain is still pain.

The difference is only a lack of suffering.

It all seems very noble, but it is something I find difficult to accept with my modern view of the individual. Like the path of great athletes it is not for everyone.

My life is rather miserable, physically I am comfortable, but mentally I am tormented. I have tried to adopt a form of nihilism in order to make life bearable. I remember being told, you are no more than your action, but find this hard to accept. Surely they cannot argue, from a philosophical point of view, that it is not the intention but the outcome which matters. This judges us with inferior skill sets as lesser beings.
