@which1iz They both descend from the same game. I know now they are quite different, but it's largely all to do with that one rule-use of the hand. A large majority of the differences between the two games are based on that rule, and just a hundred years ago shinty had that rule. The thing is, they could very easily make a hybrid game, which would really improve popularity. Hurling is bigger in Ireland than shinty is in Scotland, but neither sports have any other support, save yanks and ossies

@larry2me obviously dunno what hes saying there is a major diiference between hurling and shinty regarding speed, skill and the rules. i played them both the sticks/hurls are different scores are different hurling is 100 times quicker the ball is different i could go on but larry its safe to say you haven't got a clue wat ur on about.

@Larry2me what? mate get a life, almost everybody who likes union say league is shit, thats like saying i like cricket but baseball is shit they may have the same origins but the games are waaaay different beleive me ive played both once now grow up and stop telling me what to think.

@ConCon75 Hurling is shit? Are you mad? It's the fastest and most skillful sport on the planet! Stop being such a stubborn git! Shinty and hurling are the same sport except different organisations developed and governed the games and thus the difference in the rules. That's like saying I love rugby union, but rugby league is shit! Obviously people will prefer one over the other but calling hurling shit while saying you'd like to play shinty is nonsensical!
