  • A genius that is not appreciated. Thanks for commenting

  • Yes he did. There are no inexactitudes in this story!

  • Rick Wakeman should have done a concept album about Noggin --The Myths and Sagas of Noggin the Nog and the Black Ice at the Edge of the World !! You'd have sold a cupla' thousand in the 70s on the title alone!!

  • I'm sure if you suggested it to him he'd make it now! I'd buy it. Good ol' Rick

  • Although Oliver may be sadly gone, he will never be forgotten by so many of us who perhaps didn't quite understand completely at the time, but fell for the lyrical, liquid, lucid narration and delightful drawings of this master storyteller... I sincerely wish the creators of today's children's TV would take note, and recognize that something wonderful can grow from a beautifully told story, a child's quest for answers & imagining What IF... RIP

  • Boy does this bring back memories - how haunting the opening music is and what a wonderful voice. I'd forgotten how good the writing was, what a lovely and evocative atmosphere it created. Still looks good after all these years. Mister Postgate is probably telling stories in heaven.

  • R.I.P. Mr Postgate.

I still like to watch this (on DVD) as it was one of my fave shows back when I was a kid, abet on the C4 reruns back in the mind 1990s.

Oh well better late than never...

  • This was my childhood along with Bill & Ben, The Woodentops, Rag Tag & Bobtail etc.

    Happy days!

  • @MrBazzabee Brilliant idea.

  • I think this was on about 5 in the afternoon. Eating my tea in front of the telly on cold winter nights. I escaped into Postgate's magical world, It might have been this series that inspired me to become an Illustrator when I grew up. I don't care what you say this was a golden age of kids tv.

  • The introductory lines of this episode are truly breathtaking. Taking what is a very simple story and the simple language suitable for very small children, and giving it a majesty little short of the introduction to a Shakespeare play. The animation and the story may be simple but they do what all the greatest works do: they harness the power of the imagination

  • Oliver Postgate created a little bit of magic with his wonderful endearing voice and music. The children's shows now just seem to be brightly coloured things giggling.

  • Wow that town is my home! It's Bergen. :-)

  • I remember watching this as a child. So nostalgic

  • These short, black and white amimations weren't at all sophisticated by today's standards, but I've shown one or two of them to my five year old grand-daughter who sat, spellbound through it all. Gentle, intelligent storytelling at its finest will always enrapture young ones even if it doesn't have all the colours and music of today's kiddy TV. Thank you for posting this and thanks to Oliver Postgate whose legacy and impact on us shouldn't be underestimated.

  • Superb programme.
