Somehow I don't 'lazy' is an accurate description of why some/most developers didn't do this. I think it has more to do with talent than anything else. Remember, the spectrum was around way before the internet and the vast collection of knowledge that coders have access to today. Nowadays, you can easily figure anything given trick out by stepping through the code or reading tutorials.

Actually the AY chip is used as well in this to produce the snare drum sound, the beeper still is doing all the rest, but the sound emulation is way off on some parts here,.
