The embryo of what would later be a be-bop anthem - more than 4 months before it was cut for Guild records. ;)

This is one of the 4 Dizzy's "BcuzJazz" sent to me in trade - hard as hell to come by this earlier version of "Salt Peanuts". :)

The personnel for this January 9, 1945 recording are:

Dizzy Gillespie - trumpet
James "Trummy" Young - trombone
Don Byas - tenor sax
Clyde Hart - piano
Oscar Pettiford - bass
Shelly Manne - drums

  • Do you have his other Manor tunes? I think you could post the other version on Guild.Good way to compare the recording and arrangement if its the same or not. 65 year old version wow! I remember seeing Dizzy on various TV shows in the 70's and 80's...those big puffed out cheeks plus he seemed cool too!

  • I sure do, but I can't seem to find 'em right now.

The other record is Manor 1042 of "I Can't Get Started"/"Good Bait". Incredibly, I have the same 2 tunes on one of the first twelve 78's I snagged in 1986 - on a COLUMBIA PROMO!!!!! How Columbia got their mits on the Manor coffers, I have no idea, but they're the same cuts.

  • Great solos by all...Dizzy is again brilliant.

    Thanks Mark. 5*

    John.

  • You bet, John - what a chance to hear a landmark song being developed, for sure. :)

  • I have always liked this song. Thank you for posting this.

  • You bet, Ellen. :)

I thought about posting the Guild recording as well, but thought it might be kind of overkill.....
