@ColonelTRanchow Mears was recovering from severe foot injuries that he suffered in a crash in Practice for the Molson Indy at Sanair Speedway in Saint Pie, Quebec the previous year. He could only race on ovals that year, so Big Al raced in his place at road courses. Kinda like what happened in '92 after Mears again suffered foot injuries at Indy that eventually led him to retire after the year. Paul Tracy raced in his car on Select Road Courses the rest of that year.

Why didn't Rick Mears participate in the race?!? Big Al had a car and a crew himself, so what was that all about?
