This lovely tune was written by Jay Ungar in 1982 and was played as the farewell waltz at the annual Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps that Ungar and Molly Mason ran at the lakefront Ashokan Field Campus of the State University of New York at New Paltz. Ashokan was the name of a Catskill Region village that is now mostly covered by the Ashokan Reservoir. The tune is written, and normally played, in the key of D. I've arranged it here in the key of G.

  • Exquisite! Is there any tab for this ? It would probably take me years to learn anyway.

  • I have tab for it, but I haven't put it on my website as I've not had permission from Jay Ungar to do so. Go to the URL for my website (top right under the More info link) and email me your email address. I'll send you the PDF of the tab.

  • Wow, does this date from 1982? I never knew it was modern! I assumed it was a Scottish tune brought over to the States in the era of the American Civil War.

    Are there lyrics to it?

  • If you go to Jay Ungar's website, you'll see some "approved" lyrics - not written by him, by the way. I've never bothered with them, myself, but there you go! :-)

  • Great job! AND on a Larrivee!

  • Yes - I was just breaking the Larrivée in on this one. :-)

  • Great sound quality

  • Excellent! I've thought about playing it on viola in G since it would be just like playing in D on a violin. I love this tune and your playing is great.

  • They play it in D, but you did a nice job.

  • Very nice

  • Beautiful playing!

  • Just Excellently played. Nice job. 5/5*****

  • Hmm, I didn't know there were words to it.

  • Damn, wish he filmed it straight onto fret-board so we could actually see how to play it lol

  • Very nice !!!

  • The Hudson Valley Youth Chorale sings this song and it is really nice
