On Feb.7th,1996, the Jets decided to trade Selanne to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for Chad Kilger and Oleg Tverdovsky. He played on a line with Kariya, which gave both of them many goals. The pair played well together. In fact, it was Kariya who had met him at the 1996 All-Star game they both played and encouraged the Duck's general manager Jack Ferreira that Selanne was a good player and might have the right personality for their team.

Of Selanne's personality and game, Johnette Howard of Sports Illustrated wrote "If Selanne's wit doesn't charm someone first, his unebbing enthusiasm, his slack-jawed smile or wide-eyed look of wonder probably will. His game has all the bells and whistles.... He has blazing speed and the power to shrug off defenders; he's a natural scorer and can shrewdly read a game."

During his first season with the Ducks, Selanne scored fifty-one goals and helped lead the Ducks to their first playoff berth in 1997. The following season, Selanne again scored over fifty goals. He carried the team through much of the season, though it was in last place. Kariya was out much of the season due to injury and a contract dispute. Selanne also represented his country at the 1998 Winter Olympics, winning a bronze as a member of the Finnish hockey team.

For his effort, Selanne received a contract extension of two years, $19.5 million, taking him through the end of the 2002 season. The pressure of a new deal did not hamper or change Selanne's scoring abilities. In 1999, he won the NHL's goal-scoring title, scoring a league-leading forty-seven goals.

  • I'm a Mighty Ducks fan who happens to have both the Selanne jersey shown in that vid in the eggplant and the Kariya jersey in white. But to be honest it wasn't that bad of a trade. I mean sure Kilger did not pan out as well as Jets management hoped he would, but Tverdovsky was a pretty solid blue liner who could pack a punch on offense. He even got sent back to Anaheim around 1999-2000. Still this is not the worse trade Look at the Flyers and what they gave up for Lindros or the Leafs for Kessel

  • @dailybrother You're really missing the entire point as to why this was such a bad trade......Think about it; They announce YOUR franchise is moving, and one of the greatest players to ever play in the NHL ( and huge reason many still went to the NHL Games during the Jets "Lame Duck Year" ) Gets traded mid-season. How would you feel about that?

Selanne is STILL a superstar....where's Kilger? Where's Tverdovsky?

  • it did seem like a good trade, young skilled defenseman tverdovsky and 4th overall pick kilger and a 2nd round draft pick

  • Not sure HOW that was a good trade....Teemu Selanne = Heart & Soul of the Winnipeg Jets, for 2 no names ( who turned out to be nothing...) and a 2nd round draft pick for the Coyotes.

How did you come up with your good trade scenario?

    Bring'Em Back!

  • Just want to mention that John Paddock had almost NOTHING to do with this trade. Everyone did blame him because he had to as a G.M make the announcement however; it was the new "owners" of the Winnipeg Jets that made the decision NOT Paddock!

    Bring'Em Back!

  • Now that I know the history behind, I can't wait to see Teemu going back to the Peg to play them this year!

  • @ClassicGamer88 do you know how to skate?

  • If they were going to trade him, they should've waited until the team was in Phoenix, if they were going to trade Zhamnov in the time, thats when they should've traded Teemu.

But the team shouldn't of left in the first place, Teemu would've still been a Jet.

  • @88Murano Winnipeg Jets, not Manitoba Falcons. And I do think he will retire with the Jets, although he will be going into the HOF as a Duck.

  • it is sad to see selanne leave and then every jets fan left...then the jets left. i hopethe jets fan understand, selanne isnt coming back in this years season. the new teemu is dustin on defense! lets go jets from pittsburgh!

  • bring back the MIGHTY ducks

  • @wolfjak "teemu's career would have been so much better had he gone to phoenix...."

    Uh, no.

  • @buckyhermit Niedermayer had some good years in Anaheim but he shouldn't have his number retired, that honor is saved for someone who's had a whole career of success in one place. Teemu will undoubtedly have his number retired, but after that it's hard to make a case for anyone else. Jiggy and Kariya are possibilities but it wouldnt surprise me if their numbers werent retired either. But now we got a whole new generation of stars with Ryan Perry Getzlaf and Hiller, hopefully they win a Cup or 2

  • @dailybrother The Coyotes just reached the playoffs again. The Thrashers are going to Peg.

  • Teemu is coming back along with the Manitoba Falcons. He will play again in Winnipeg. His last year in the NHL will be in Winnipeg 2011 / 2012 season
