Meat Trade: Live Horse Transport from Canada to Japan

Canadian draft horses are routinely live shipped to Japan for slaughter from the Calgary and Winnipeg International Airports. On arrival in Japan, horses are transported to a feedlot; once they reach desired weight they are slaughtered for meat.

2012 footage taken of Alberta horses being shipped live to Japan for slaughter shows horses in a feedlot being loaded with electric prods into transport trucks, transported to the Calgary International Airport and being crated in wooden crates so small they cannot stand in their natural position, in violation of Section 142 of the Health of Animals Regulations.

Remember, everyone, the Canadian people hate horse slaughter as much as we do here in the US. They don't eat horses either except in a few sections of Quebeck.

Their CFIA is just as bad as our USDA!

This is ridiculous. Japan ships us a daily dose of direct ton loads of Fukushima Daiichi radioactive isotopes via the jet stream, while Canadian politicians ship over Canada's national icons for a bureaucratic profit. Sorta like sending raw logs to China to build empty cities while BC workers get booted to the curb, while property developers build 200 square feet condos & try to seel those to the public as sustainable living.

There are actually much more horse consumption in north America than one may suspect. Horse is readily available in specialty grocers across Canada and the United States and is, in some areas, more readily available than lamb. Statistically speaking, horse meat consumption is growing in both of our nations.

How that plays out is the majority of horse people cause so much mess, violent death & agony, while a small percentage of truly amazing people work like crazy to save them. Mad respect to the kill pen rescuers. I donate to groups on fb, but to have to be in the pens, seeing the ones you couldn't get homes for get shipped to slaughter would likely drive me mad. I send them huge blessings and what money I can.

You hit the nail on the head, Dehzee. This couldn't happen if the horse community stood as one against it. Instead, it's conveninent for them to allow it to go on so they can continue to breed and make a profit, defending it as "humane" form of euthanasia. It makes me ill!

As a human and a canadian, this horrifies me. As disgusting as I find it, I find people in the horse community even more disgusting. Where are these horses coming from? Pmu, yes, but it is horse owners sending these creatures to these unspeakable deaths. I have argued w/ many horse owners online from america who find this a completely acceptable way to deal with no longer wanted horses. Americans sell way more horses into slaughter, this is all our problem...
