Dr. Astrov in Checkhov's play "Uncle Vanya" (published 1899) demonstrates the first (at least known to me) use of spatial and temporal analysis with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). If we consider GIS as a concept and not merely a piece of software then Dr. Astrov (and possibly Chekhov) should be considered as 'father of GIS". Also, se here the brilliant performance of Lawrence Olivier and Joan Plowright.
