Wood ducks build their roosts in holes in trees or nesting boxes built for this purpose. We had 14 ducklings hatch this year, the first year we've put up the box. A day after they hatch, the ducklings leave the nest box, never to return again. For pictures of the nesting box setup (including the webcam images from inside) and other pictures of the ducklings, check out http://wildside.zenfolio.com/p505192626/

  • @alcancum I am nearly positive you are trolling, but for the benefit of those who are genuinely curious: This is normal and everyday behavior for the wood duck species. If the nesting box wasn't there, the mother would had laid eggs in a tree hollow and they would have jumped from there. Try a little research next time.

  • what do you use for them to climb out with?

  • @4986hunterofsouth A simple wire grid (similar to chicken wire) stapled to the side gave them an easy ladder.

  • aww their like mini drunks

  • Omg lol i laughed so hard at this <3 LOL

  • @xaandria86 amen to that, its nice to know that some people actually know what goes on in nature instead of just being babies saying oh no the poor ducklings !!

  • no i didnt know

  • Oh, how cute! Yes, totally normal for wood ducks. They can survive falls up to 300 feet.

  • @RingneckDoveFan Actually, she can and does. I didn't think she'd be able to fit either, until she did. Remember the wood ducks are much smaller than the more common mallard ducks. Check out some of the other wood duck videos on YouTube, some of them have captured the mama duck entering or exiting their nest boxes.

  • @xaandria86

Well that doesn't exactly answer the question. How did she lay the eggs? She clearly cannot fit in that hole.

  • Delightful video. Thanks for passing it along! Thought you might find our recent "sequel" interesting too. Ours are mallards in the Adirondacks' Champlain Valley. Cheers!
