161 candidates, among the finest young pianists in the world, registered for the preliminary round. 24 of them—8 women and 16 men from 12 countries—are moving on to the following rounds, which will take place from May 23 to June 3. Countries with the greatest number of participants are Canada (4, including 1 from Quebec), China, South Korea, the United States and Russia (3 each) and Japan (2). They are followed by Australia, Germany, Israel, Italy, Poland and Switzerland, with 1 candidate from each. The mean age is of 25 years.
