MaximsNewsNetwork: 23 December 2009 - UNAMID: Darfur, Sudan - In Darfur, Sudan friends and family celebrate returning pilgrims from the Hajj to Mecca.

Dozens of wives and daughters gathered on a Saturday morning in El-Fasher to roast sheep and prepare thick porridge (assida), beef kebab, and sauce with fish paste (moulah), eager to please more than 500 of their guests.

A huge plate of traditional food is served at each table by these local women, proud to treat their guests with the special Darfurian cuisine.

SOUNDBITE (English): Samira ElMalik, El-Fasher Resident:
We make the food from Darfur; from Darfur, exactly from El-Fasher. We cook fine food; fine and delicious food.

Samira described the work involved in preparing the feast, including slaughtering six sheep in order to serve their many visitors.

SOUNDBITE (English): Samira ElMalik, El-Fasher Resident:
These women came from many parts of our town. Some of them slept here and made this food last night. Some made this food in this morning.

According to Mohammed Adam this is the way to celebrate a native sons pilgrimage to the holy land.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic): Mohammed Adam, Returned from the Hajj
Whenever someone comes from the holy land, thats the way we celebrate. As local people here particularly in Darfur.

The pilgrimage to Mecca, known as the Hajj is a religious duty that every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so must carry out at least once in their lifetime. ...............................................................................................
