I started this painting by painting my body black. Then I laid on the canvas in a fetal position (after a shower)I started into the painting with oil paints and dry pigments. I bought some in a shop in Queretaro, sold at a hardware store. The color-dust- inside barrels ready to be scooped into small plastic bags....I wanted to take one of each!
Once home in the USA, my favorite Cobalt blue was too tempting, and I scooped it right out of the bag to smear it on the canvas. Later, I found out it is highly toxic.
It should not come into contact with your skin, and you should wear a mask when working with it in dry form.

The finished piece can be seen on my site www.ClaudiaOlivos.com
It is called "La Frontera"
In Mexico, they "disappeared" seven of my paintings, when I went to exhibit them at a museum in Queretaro (March 2005).
Though I have asked the Mexican Embassy here in Washington DC for help.... they have not done so. After a year of waiting for the Mexican Govnt. to help without "the ugly American to step in"-- I contacted the USA Embassy in Mexico ... I have yet to have a resolution.
I have accepted an invitation to exhibit in Paris in September,in Greece in October and at the Florence Biennale in Dec. 2007.... yet the Mexican government continues to hold my paintings in Toluca, Mexico and I am now afraid to send my work abroad.
Mexico is a beautiful country, nonetheless.
Update: September 2008. Paintings still missing. Nobody is looking, but I still have hope they will show up at my doorstep in the same wooden crate I shipped them to Mexico in.
About a year ago, I made 7 new paintings using the ame process. They can be found onmy website under "body paintings".

  • como va tu juego?

  • Wow i'm sorry to hear about your paintings becoming political prisoners!

I can relate to your urge to touch the pigment, it's so visceral and tactile and childlike. Shame so many art materials are hideously toxic...

  • ...I agree! I am now using disposable gloves with dry pigment, but stil try to enjoy the visceral pleasure of feeling paint and materials otherwise!

  • great work, your a pretty lady too

  • that's really cool professor.

into the canvas. It just felt raw. I love it.

  • @olivosARTstudio continued. combination of your work, personality, and your style (the way you work). To me, your first video shows your freedom(?) in the way you work. Does that make sense? YOu were barefoot, walking on the canvas(I know there would have been no other way to do that, but still), feeling the canvas. I don't know, I could see your passion. And then when I saw your second (and my fav) video, I knew I would love not only your work but watching you work. Smashing the pigment into..

  • @olivosARTstudio You are welcome! I know that some may think that the video may be too long, but for other artists, I think it is nice to watch others' processes. For me, I just love watching people paint. Obviously I have my preferences as to who I want to watch, but in general I think it is interesting.

You know that feeling you get when you first meet someone (even through the internet) that you know you are going to connect with or be inspired by? I have that with you. I think it is a...

  • @Vuji222 Thank you Dunielle! I am so glad you like it~! I have filmed some longer vids of my process..... but I always feel they may be too long ...I will keep it in mind in the future -if you see them, you will know it is largely due and thanks to your encouragement!

  • I love this painting. This is the video that made me subscribe to your channel. I just went to your website again to look at the finished product. I love it. I wish you would have filmed you painting the entire piece. It is so cool to watch this video and see where the piece is at and then to go look at the final product. I think my favorite thing about this painting (and it is probably because I watched you do it) is the large spot of cobalt at the bottom of the painting. Love it.
