i think you have some great ideas,
i think for businesses they do definately need to improve the upsells for existing custmers, its seven times easyier to sell to an existing customer than it is to get new customers.
i have figured this out the hard way
selling to pain sounds great, emotion creates motion, it is not hard to ask a prospective customer "how much revenue they are loosing by not having your product" before letting them know the price.
