On April 4, 2011 over 1,200 events—teach-ins, vigils, faith services and town halls were held across the country.

These actions honor the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated April 4, 1968 in Memphis, TN, where he had gone to stand with sanitation workers demanding their dream: The right to bargain collectively for a voice at work and a better life.

  • Without unions, there is nothing that can stop big business from reverting to the working conditions of the 19th century, when my great-uncles worked 60 hours a week in the coal mines when they were 12. Remember the Triangle Fire? Think it's ancient history? Look at the 29 dead miners in the non-union mine in West Virginia last year. Think again!

  • I am extremely proud of my Union Membership in TWU Local 556. Our Union is strong. Our Union is leading. They have my support. We need to realize that if the states can take away collective bargaining rights with the stroke of a pen, then certainly the Federal Government could do the same to us!
