So, yes, IDEALLY, telling the police would be the thing to do. In reality, it's not because police do not protect you enough.

So even though it's ideal, police don't do it in a private manner. They knock on your door when investigating to the perp can see and will end up killing your relatives. Now you have more homicides. I've seen it many times
