I have been experimenting some with how to get the best video conferencing setup, how to enable several people to actually be involved, and in the process I discovered this very basic tip: http://tr.im/ibQa - when you use Skype, iChat or MSN video, put the window of the person you are talking to close to the camera (usually in the upper middle of the screen)! It may seem silly and basic, but I think it makes a huge difference to whether the person is actually talking to you or just absent.
