Keeping your cat's nails short is an important part of grooming and can help prevent injury to you and your cat. In this video clip, Dr. Wendy demonstrates how to clip the nails safely and properly.
Step 1 -- Restrain your cat. You may want to have another person available to help hold. Wrapping your cat snugly in a towel can also help keep them still and comfortable. Having the cat up on a table or countertop can also prevent him/her from getting away from you. Do not force or fight with your cat to do this. . If your cat is not cooperative for nail clipping, it is recommended to clip a few nails at a time until he/she becomes more comfortable with having this done.
Step 2- In order to visualize your cat's nails, you will need to retract each nail by pressing gently on the top of the paw. You should be able to clearly see the delineation between the pink and white of the nail. The pink portion is called the quick and contains the nerve and blood supply. You will want to stay away from the quick and try to clip the white portion of the nail. Using a nail clipper that is smaller in size will make clipping easier.
Cats generally do not wear down their nails when scratching at posts or blocks. Cat nails shed an outer sheath revealing a new and sharp nail every few weeks. Therefore, it is recommended to clip your cat's nails every 2-4 weeks to keep them healthy and to prevent them from getting too long.

Step 3- Give your cat pets and treats so they recognize nail trimming as a positive experience.

Learning how to clip your cat's nails will keep them and you safe and will save money on frequent nail trims by a veterinarian or groomer.

  • i wish my cat was that calm

  • @asiantrolls Try to make your cat sleep, and while she is sleeping trim her nails.

If she wakes up, just quickly hide the scissors and start stroking her until she gets back to sleep.

Thats what I do and it works really well! :)
