Pedestrians spontaneously perform a folk dance in a street in the old town of Pécs, southern Hungary. Apparently some old culture is still alive.

Most participants obviously know the dance and its steps and perform it quite well.

The whole travel report, albeit in German language, can be found at: http://blog.michna.com/node/219

  • Hgmichna, very nice video! I only would like to add that this is Macedonian folk music, and the dancing is not spontaneously performed. It has been a part of a series of dancing events with music from all over Europe, organized every summer in Pécs. I hope you liked your time here!

  • Yes, it was very nice and interesting in Pécs and in Hungary in general. Thanks for the information!

I couldn't discern any dance group. To me it looked as if the pedestrians spontaneously started and joined the dance. If there was a core dance group, I would still guess that the majority of the dancers were bypassers who joined the dance. Perhaps they learned the steps very quickly by observing the others.

  • Yep, that's the way. Dancers just stand among the pedestrians who joined, and they taught the steps before and during the dance. This is why no dance group can be discerned.

  • Next time I will join in too. (:-)

  • Pécs

  • Thanks! (I had stupidly misspelled the name of the city. Meanwhile corrected.)

  • Pécs is in South Hungary and that part of the country is rich in cultures. Croatian, Macedonian, Serbian, German, Gypsy and of course Hungarian to name some. I grew up not far from there and remember the area as the melting pot of Hungary. All these cultures were a part of life there and we respected each ethnic group and learned from each other.

Thank you for posting this wonderful video.

  • Pécs a Balkán kapuja!!

  • wierd that the hungarians know how to dance at macadonian folk dance..

  • Good to see even young people respect old ways.

  • Agree, This is not traditional Hungarian music / dance, but still very nice.
