Gender-based violence is any act or threat of physical, sexual or psychological aggression against a woman. It is a human rights violation, and is one of the most serious public health problems worldwide.
According to the World Health Organization, one out of every four women reports having been a victim of sexual violence perpetrated by an intimate partner. Considering the harmful effects that violence can have on a woman's health, the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region developed a regional project to combat gender-based violence in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This video was created as a tool to sensitize health care providers and the general public about the issue of violence against women.
The women who appear in this video are clients of member associations of the Federation and they all have attended individual or group counseling sessions. All of them obtained clear information about how their interview would be used and consented freely to being interviewed.
