@solehass Before Lincoln, the American Colonization Society was formed in 1816. These WHITE men believed that blacks would be better off returned to Africa. Problem was NO African tribes would accept newcomers. So, Liberia was formed by purchasing land from local tribes. In 1819 they recieved $100,000 from congress, purchased the freedom of 88 slaves and set sail to Liberia. They also recieved $ from New Jersey Maryland,Missouri,Pennsylvania­.Free slaves were offered free transport.Most stayed.
