Sweet rifle....awesome ammo. I'm leaning towards getting a 17 rifle. Practice with a 22 and hunt with the 17 !!

Can you kill a deer with one of these rounds? Can it kill a human? Say I want to have a sniping rifle for the zombie apocalypse, will this rifle do or will I need something bigger?
-
@SupremeAmerican I beg to differ. You ever see what it does to metal targets? The difference is obvious. The 17 has more impact speed.

The 17hmr is more accurate than the 22LR or the 22 Mag. I've shot many small game at 100+ yards. Even killed a couple of coyotes with head shots. Dropped dead in their tracks. Haven't went boar hunting yet. I've got a 22 and a 17. I prefer the 17 for serious target shooting and varmint hunting. However, the 22 rounds are cheaper. I enjoy them both though. :) For larger game of course you use a larger weapon. The 17 is a varmint rifle not a big game rifle by no means.

@chrissept21 I have seen that Coyote/Wolf thing here in Oklahoma. Going to kill one eventually,then I'll have the proof.

at 200 yards the 17 hmr has 60 foot lbs of energy .. that would be the same thing as dropping a 1 lb brick on your skull from 60 feet in the air. its all about shot placement.

i guarantee the17 will do twice the damage a 22 mag will

@SupremeAmerican nope but it works!

@ChrisCorle01 yotes aint worth 50 cents a bullet
-
@SupremeAmerican i do this too but with a 1911
How the 17HMR the best rimfire round when it's only real world advantage is target shooting?
The 22 mag is cheaper, accurate enough for small game ( depending on the rifle ), delivers more energy, cheaper, has more bullet selection, bucks the wind better, can cycle in semi auto's....
As a proud owner of a Marlin 917VS that litterally shoots tacks, it sees little use other than plinking chipmunks at 125 yards and beyond.
Great little round, but severely OVERHYPED
