Dr. Leslie Barratt, Professor of Linguistics, received an A.B. degree from Beloit College, an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.S. in Elementary Education from Northwest Missouri State University, and a Ph.D. from The University of Iowa. Although all of her degrees are from Midwestern schools, Dr. Barratt was born and raised in the East, just outside of New York City. She took Russian in high school and learned Flemish as an exchange student in Belgium. After college classes in linguistics, she decided to pursue the study of language as her career. Dr. Barratt has taught at ISU since 1980. She has spent two of her sabbaticals as a Senior Fulbright Lecturer in Hungary (1987-8) and China (1995-6). During 2004-2005 she visited and/or lectured in Turkmenistan, P.R. China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Brazil.
