Canadian Medical Assistance Teams (CMAT) deployed its rapid disaster assessment team to help the people of Japan after the powerful 8.9 magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami devastated the region in March 2011, which was centred about 300km north of the capitol, Tokyo.
CMAT's rapid assessment team conducted a needs assessment in the Miyagi Prefecture, around the city of Sendai to ascertain the level of devastation. This assessment included evaluating the destroyed infrastructure and surveying the health needs of the earthquake and tsunami affected victims.
Primary Health medical teams assisted with basic care, supported search and recovery efforts, and assisted residents in the arduous task of regaining their lives and homes.
