captain, you seem to be about to start a war that will kill trillions in order to save your friends. I'm aware that Original Trek allowed Kirk to make all these kinds of emotionally moving but murderously idiotic decisions and magically get away with it every time, but in later Trek incarnations this magic was done away with.
