  • I recently sold my 966C. I feel like I may have sold the best machine I've ever owned! With the right man at the controls, it sure could move the dirt! We can't get too attached to iron though, It was a 76J series built with pride in the U.S.A.

  • I disagree, that loader is as good as a new one the same size. The only thing that changed is the confort for the operator.

  • I have to agree with absolutely everything you just said!

  • lol, seems like it was great for its day, but there are plenty better out now that can easily out perform it. I would almost guess that Caterpillar built these loaders too well: when the 966's were all far outdated, they were still in useable shape even though no one wanted to use them!

  • Little power, hydrualics aren't the greatest, soo many pins to grease, loud, tiny bucket etc etc

  • Ive played around with a 966C for some time and its really the only loader ive only driven. I love it mainly because its the only one ive had the pleasure of driving and i dont know what else is out there; but i was just wondering out of curiosity what makes these loaders so bad?

  • yeah, i know what you guys mean but seriously... pain in the ass to operate. Our company still has 2 of these kickin around.

  • He is right, they might not run the best, but with thousands of hours, that's the best!

  • Come on, I've seen these things running at 20,000 hrs without an overhaul. Simple design, overbuilt components. Usually the first machine at a jobsite, and the last. Yeah, compared to a new machine they suck to operate, but they came out in 1969, and were still being built in Brazil up to 1993. Longest lived Cat loader model production run ever.

  • good lord i had to operate one of these this week and i wanted to kill myself
