I think the opening interval of a minor 7th gives the music a mysterious alien sound even with the vocals clearly audible.

They totally missed the point of the vocals...they're not supposed to be clearly audible like they are here (it sounds terrible). Alexander Courage meant for the vocals to blend in with the instruments in order to give the theme an odd sound that might not be recognizable (and therefore seem mysterious and spacey).
They skipped all that and "fixed" the theme by making the vocals stand out, which is missing the point.
