On a very blustery day I ventured back to my favourite location on the climb up Llanfihangel Bank in Monmouthshire.
Ex GWR King Class 6024 King Edward 1 is seen heading The Marches Monarch from Eastleigh to Shrewbury, which the King worked from Bristol Temple Meads as it flies up this notorious climb in superb condition. The humming sound is coming from the generator in the Kings train. The King was followed a few hours later by A1 Pacific 60163 Tornado having worked the Cathedrals Express all the way from Paddington, and also destined for Shrewsbury. Please excuse the odd shake but the gusts were so strong that on occasions I could hardly stand up....Enjoy ...I have been able to compare this climb with one this engine did on it's first climb up Llanfihangel in 1990, and this run is faster....what a wonderful achievement!

  • Hi Robert, I have daughters living in Abergavenny so I am pretty familiar with the whole line, Newport to Chester. Apart from one northbound journey in the 1950s to see some elderly and distant(!) family members in Hereford - with absolutely no idea now of the engine on the front - I've never travelled it in anything but a class158 which isn't at all comparable to the sort of progress filmed here. I trust you have your 'pitch' reserved for the next lot.

  • @jaceybus It's always a pleasure to get feedback that one of my videos evoke such happy memories. This particular location is not easy to reach especially when you're in your sixties. Having said that, who knows what the future holds....this is a magical location....Bob

  • Thank goodness we still breed and are able to call on such sporting loco crews. Splendid work splendidly filmed. Tks.

  • @jaceybus It certainly is, these crews often don't get the praise they deserve...Thanks for your kind comments...Bob

  • Wonderful view of that engine coming through the trees, you picked a perfect spot Bob.

  • @eurodestination Thanks Gary, it's a hard location to get to, but I love it when I get there......Bob

  • @robmasterman To be fair it's not the car's fault, I had the alternator re-placed about a month ago and it came loose!! So much for going to a 'good' garage. Fighting fit again now, might pop out for the two test trains tomorrow :-)

  • @MG06ZT Sorry to hear about your car Keith, I'd been looking forward to this day for months, and I loved every minute of it....Bob

  • Great to have the two tours on one day and what a great location. I was working so couldn't get out for them, missed Tornado at Stratford as well, car trouble :-(

  • @pacelweb Thanks very much for such kind comments, which are received with much appreciation....Bob
