Raptor Retail - Service Learning through "Visions"
Funded by the State of Vermont's 21 Century Promising Practice Grant and money from the NH Charitable Fund, Rivendell Middle School opened its retail store in 2009. Raptor Retail is a School-Based Enterprise coordinated by middle school Visions students. Quality handmade, school spirit and specialty/holiday items will be sold year round. Through this venture, students have had the opportunity to learn about all aspects of running a business. They ran an entire floral sale, ordered and handmade inventory, designed the store cabinet, designed uniforms, used spreadsheets to track inventory and sales, and much more.
Students celebrated their Grand Opening at EXPO Night on May 20, 2009 and sold more than $500.00 in products.
Raptor Retail has handmade items for sale this year, including jewelry, recycled handbags, and greeting cards. In addition, there are many school spirit items, including logo-imprinted green stainless water bottles, kid sized white T-shirts with a green Raptor logo, 1G flash drives and bumper stickers. School supplies and athletic bags, notebooks, pens, pencils, and many more items are available at the store.
Students worked with mentors from the Tuck Business School to learn more about marketing and product selection. Volunteers from the community taught students the finer points of bookkeeping, using various software programs.
All profits from the sale of these products benefit the RISD Visions Program.
