you dont do 9*3 because they didnt pay 9 dollars they payed 25/3= 8.33333333 an then the extra 5 dollars is = bellhop gets 2 then 3 dollars is left and each guy get 1 dollar

I have never even taken a course in abstract mathematics. I have always just thought like that naturally, sorry.

the real equation
25 was used to pay the rent. 2 dollars in the other man's pocket, then he gave the two men 1 dollar each. so it's now 9+9=18 (becoz he gave back 1 dollar each) for him, it's 8 dollars (coz he has 2 dollars in his pocket) then there still remains 1 dollar at hand for the guy was given back 5 dollars. it's 9+9+8+1=30 clear enough....

9 times 3 = 27 - 2 (bellhop) = 25
the men never knew the room was 25, the bellhop ripped them off 2 dollars so they think the room is 27.

answer:
He is saying the formula for this problem is:
(9x3)+2=30 which would be 29=30 X wrong
The formula for this problem is actually:
(9x3)-2+5=30 which is 30=30 correct
In other words, you should be adding the $2 to the $27 you should be subtracting it. $30 originally for the room, $3 dollars for each man, $2 bellhop, $25 paid for room
