PlusObama Talks Tough at NAACP ConventionObama Talks Tough at NAACP ConventionThe Associated PressDemocrat Barack Obama told the nation's oldest civil rights organization that blacks must show greater responsibility for improving their own lives. (July 15)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:Obama's entrance]Barack Obama walked right into a crowd of supporters at the 99th annual NAACP Convention and talked to them about tough social issues facing African Americans...like single parent families.sot: BARACK OBAMA: "TEACHING OUR SONS TO TREAT WOMEN WITH RESPECT. AND TO REALIZE THAT RESPONSIBILITY DOES NOT END WITH CONCEPTION. AND WHAT MAKES THEM A MAN IS NOT THE ABILITY TO HAVE A CHILD BUT TO RAISE ONE. THAT'S A MESSAGE WE NEED TO SEND."[Notes:Obama and crowd cutaways]Obama first sent that message on Father's Day to the black community. Just last week, Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson criticized Obama in front of an open microphone for talking down to blacks. SOT: OBAMA: I KNOW THERE ARE SOME WHO SAY I'M BEING TOO TOUGH. NAACP I'M HERE TO REPORT I'M NOT GOING TO STOP TALKING ABOUT IT.[Notes:cutaways]And that type message is a winning one for members in the audience.SOT: STEPHANIE MORTON/CINCINNATI: "I DON'T THINK HE'S BEING TOO TOUGH. WE ALL HAVE TO COME TOGETHER AND ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY."SOT: RICK HARDY/CINCINNATI: "TOUGH LOVE. THERE'S A WORD IN THERE FOR ALL OF US. WE'RE RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS AND THAT'S ALL HE'S TALKING ABOUT.[Notes:cutaways from speech]The man who could become the 1st black president in our nation's history could make his home in the White House on the 100th anniversary of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People. But Obama made it clear that problems plaguing blacks won't go away with just electing him president.SOT: OBAMA: "WE NEED POLITICIANS DOING WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO AND NEED CEO'S DOING WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO AND WE NEED PARENTS DOING WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO."[Notes:standup]Even though the NAACP Convention provides a natural crowd of Obama supporters, it's actually a non partisan organization. So presumptive Republican nominee John McCain will speak here as well. His speech is expected to focus on education.Mark Carlson, AP, Cincinnati, Ohio.

  • @wgm72 mmmWET

  • @hacktik101 i just watched part of it, Bush really isnt to blame for the recession. We the people are to blame, along with the banks people took out loans that they couldnt pay back and banks let them. That's the main reason. The war on iraq and afganistan needed to happen but they shoulda just let our troops go in guns ablazin to actually take care of it. Obama is a socialist SOB who only thinks about himself. A.K.A.- A typical liberal.
