@Almightyrastus PS, don't forget your telecoms and other data lines as just as much damage can be caused by transient over voltages coming in on them as from power based surges.

Be very careful what SPD (surge protection device) you do go for though. Some of the cheap ones without thermal disconnects on the metal oxide varistors (MOVs) used in them can overheat and even cause fires. The best system would be to go for a whole house co-ordinated system with a unit on the incoming lines which can take a large surge then smaller units on sensitive equipment to further iron out the voltage let through by your service entrance SPD.

Again, it's your stuff (including UPS) believe what you'd like - the Surge Protection you're going to get is poor at best - and rarely will you find any protection before the UPS electronics - which means UPS itself is not protected at all. IEEE recommendations are very specific about protecting UPS's - UPS's are NOT surge protectors - nor are transformers or switch mode power supply's. But again, it's your stuff, do what you'd like.

He's not completely WRONG!

Some UPS do provide power surge protector, but he did not mention it. It's not really his fault.

Go look in your local computer store where they sell UPS and I'm certain you'll find a UPS with power surge protection feature included.

i had ligtning yesterday so i decided to save my work and shut down the pc when i was about to shut down both of my monitors flashed aswell as the tv so my monitors flashed and back to desktop again did this happen to my pc or not since the pc didn't reboot or anything all happend was both of my monitor inc tv flashed off/on my pc works fine no problem did this couse anything bad to my pc or made the performance worse or was i lucky nothing at all happend please someone answer me thankyou

waah my Xp version had a Power surge and wont come back on :'( You should fear the POWER SURGE.!! he has dangerous powers..
