The Only House In the World (Pome)

Haunted house. Always a house.
The one place where you are supposed to be most safe,
where you can go after a long day, close and lock the door behind you,
everything you don't want in The House with you behind you,
and collapse on the forgiving sofa.

That is the place I have come to most suspect and fear.

Victims, if that's the correct term for them, of a haunting
always refer to the haunt as 'The House,'
as if there is no other house in the world.
As if, and perhaps this is truly the case,
God to them is The House.

It's not the voices, it's not the visions, it's the feeling.
The feeling that your insides are cold,
that your very intestines are cold,
that your tongue is frozen to the roof of your mouth
as if the roof of your mouth is actually a streetlamp in the winter.

I told my father that I didn't want to go back in The Room.
He laughed and gave me a camera,
and he told me to go capture it.

Behind that closet door there is another closet door
and another and another.
And when you fling that closet door aside, there is a closet.
When you move the hats and coats aside to reveal the back
of the closet, where you are sure something is lurking,
someone is watching, the devil is fingering
a knife; when you finally move the hats and coats aside, you see
nothing but the back of the closet,
wallpapered and peeling,
exactly what someone who had never experienced The House
would expect to see,
and that's the most frightening part of it.
