This is the insides of the WOW "World of Wonders" 1985 Teddy Ruxpin. I've had this just sitting around for awhile & figured I'd make a video for anyone who wonders how they work inside. The main reason I took him all apart is because his mouth & eyes no longer moved, The belt had rotted inside his head. This model was made much cheaper than the "Big" Teddy ruxpin which consisted of three motors in the head that had potentiometers attached which relayed information about position of the eyes & mouth to the on baord circuit. One motor for the eyes, One for the top mouth piece & one for the bottom mouth piece. Also the "Big" version used standard cassette tapes, There was also another version that had "special" tapes that looked like cassettes but were actually slightly smaller. In my lifetime I have owned all three models, Most of which I got for $1 or $2 at thrift stores or Flea Markets. Though my first one was brand new & I recieved it as a Christmas gift. It was the standard cassette tape version.
This model however consisted of a single motor with quit a few pully's & belts in the head & a single potentiometer that relayed the information of the position of both the eyes & the mouth. It uses a cart tape that was specially designed for him & is about 4 times the size of a pocket rocker cart tape. The tape that I have in it in the video runs for about 14 1/2 minutes. If you notice the circuit board there is a 2 prong plug where the head motor connected & a 3 prong plug where the potentiometer connected.
Also just for fun I bypassed the potentiometer for the playback motor, I did not adjust it however because I was afraid he would never talk the correct speed again.
The cassette mechanism uses standard magnetic audio tape such as in a standard cassette tape or pocket rocker, Like the pocket rocker & 8 tracks it has a silicon backing to help extend It's life. It uses a 2 Track head that is positioned in the middle of the tape, It's a standard stereo cassette tape head. One channel is used for voice & the other holds a high pitched fluttering audio track that controls the movement of the mouth & eyes. It has a start / stop button on the back of the toy & a metallic splice on the tape stops it automatically once it has played though once.
The head, I might have it around here somewhere still, I always wanted to drill the eyes out & put red L.E.D. lights in them. lol
As a child interested in robots & electronics, I would say that Teddy Ruxpin was one of my favorite toys, It was the first robot / animatronic toy that I ever owned.
LISTEN CLOSELY: You can hear the crosstalk of the tape, A little bit & hear the noise that controlls the motors.
that is so cool that tape is like an 8 track but proprietary. BTW im downloading the mp3 from the mediafire link in the description and is it ok if i download this video and add it to my PSP?

Ah, Quiet Please. That's still one of my favorite TR tapes. It's a shame that I can't listen to it any more though, my Teddy's speaker no longer works, and I can't find the version of that tape that goes with the big Teddy.
LOL at being able to fast-forward! Were you just touching something metal to the circuit board?

Are you sure It's the speaker? Usually speakers don't just go bad. Most likely the belt has rotted on the tape player, Usually It's not too hard to take a philips screw driver & open the back & change the belt, But don't use rubber bands, They break really fast. You need to use a rubber belt designed for tape players usually black in color.

My first guess was the speaker, because the sound was the first thing to go. At first he would move his mouth/eyes to the words but no music would play, now he just makes a buzzing sound with no movement or sound. I'll look at a hardware store or something and see if I can find some of those bands though, thanks for the tip. I've done some work on big Teddy before so maybe he won't be too hard to fix up =)

When I get some spare money, I want to get one of the new digital ones, Just to have a modern version of something I grew up having as a child & maybe one day share with my kids If / When I have kids.
