Nice evaluation. Over all, I agree, but the American just has a better tone through and through. In the end, I sold both and love my modified 92 P, American P bass the best.

A neat comparison, but not necessarily an apples to apples comparison on any front: MIJ vs MIA, P/J vs J/J, Rosewood vs Maple, Thinline Basswood Body vs fullsize Alder Body, but it's still a fascinating comparison. I like the S1 Jazz better through and through. I like a P-Neck slightly better than a J-Neck, but I like the way two Js "marry" better than the way a (single-coil) J marries with a P. The DG strings seem to heavily favor the bridge pickup. P-pups blend better with humbuckers IMO.
