The great Fritz Kreisler performs his own arrangement of the celebrated Pierrots Tanzlied from the opera Die tote Stadt by his close friend, Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The pianist is Carl Lamson and it was recorded for Victor on March 28 1924. The piece became one of Kreisler's favourite encores, especially in concerts he gave in Vienna before 1938.
His tempi may seem rather fast for modern tastes but the aria itself was never supposed to be taken at a leaden pace (as is often the case nowadays. It is, after all, a waltz! The other consideration is that it had to fit onto a single sided 10" 78rom shellac disc. It is utterly charming and a rare record, which is why I am happy to share it here on YOU TUBE along with some contemporaneous photographs. Enjoy!
