About the Foundation
The Massage Therapy Foundation (the Foundation) was established and chartered by visionary leaders of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and originally incorporated in the State of Illinois as the AMTA Foundation in 1990. The organization's name was officially changed to the Massage Therapy Foundation by action of its Board of Trustees in February 2004.

At its inception, the Foundation was established as a 501 [c]3, tax-exempt, public charity that was able to receive tax deductible donations (as allowed by law) and serve the profession of therapeutic massage and bodywork as an organization funding massage therapy related research projects, community service programs and scholarships to students enrolled in formal massage therapy educational programs and faculty members in massage therapy education programs wishing to enhance their teaching skills. Initially, the governing body of the Foundation was a "mirror board" of the AMTA. In 1998, a separately elected and independent, 11-member Board of Trustees was seated and continues to serve as the governing body of the Foundation. The present officers of the Foundation include a President, two (2) Vice Presidents and eight (8) additional Trustees-- four of whom are public members, four are members of the profession and two are representatives from the AMTA Board of Directors. The work of the Foundation is accomplished through a committee structure and fleet of volunteers.

Mission
The Massage Therapy Foundation advances the knowledge and practice of massage therapy by supporting scientific research, education, and community service.

Guiding Principles
The Foundation commits to:
• Upholding the principles of philanthropy
• Contributing to the understanding and appreciation of massage therapy.
• Increasing the Foundation's influence, credibility, and visibility in health and wellness.
• Sustaining the Foundation's organizational effectiveness.
• Fostering the spirit of collaboration.

Goals
1. Advance research on therapeutic massage and bodywork
2. Foster massage therapy initiatives that serve populations in need
3. Promote research literacy and capacity in the profession
4. Support the evidence-informed practice of therapeutic massage and bodywork based upon available research, client factors, and practitioner experience and judgment
5. Fortify the Foundation's financial resources and organizational effectiveness
