"Kids can learn whatever they have the mind to learn," says Nancy Haberstich, CEO, founder, and president of Nanobugs Inc.

The problem is that in the mind of a child brushing teeth and washing hands are not associated with entertainment. Very rarely will you find a child willing to learning about the world of microbiology or health awareness and infection prevention. Consider the following when attempting to teach children about the benefits of keeping clean and staying healthy.

==Give it Personality==

-Kids won't be interested in scientific charts and tables; combine normally dull lectures with cartoon characters.

-A child will remember an interactive, engaging personality more than they will remember a picture of a microscopic creature. By combining real life infection prevention facts with imaginative images that encourage a child's interest, they will learn more.

==Give it Entertainment==

-Kids love games; they love to collect things. Associating healthy living with entertainment stimulates a child's desire to continue the positive healthy behaviors.

-Children have the ability to learn long complex words, like the names of dinosaurs. Use this to teach about microscopic creatures, which have equally complex names. Difficult sounds do not necessarily imply difficult lessons.

==Give it Meaning==

-Help children understand that their health is in their control.

-Use catchphrases to help trigger recall of healthy living lessons.

==Give it Reinforcement==

-Do not stop at teaching about healthy living; encourage the practice by helping children learn infection prevention practices such as the correct method of washing hands and brushing teeth.

-Promote healthy living in your own routines. Wash hands before meals and after using the restroom, and carry a vial of hand sanitizer to clean hands when soap and water aren't available.
