Interview with Ven. Bikshuni Thubten Chodron at Pagoda Phat Hue (Buddha's Wisdom) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

"Ven. Chodron emphasizes the practical application of Buddha's teachings in our daily lives and is especially skilled at explaining them in ways easily understood and practiced by Westerners. She is well-known for her warm, humorous, and lucid teachings."

  • I haven't actually seen her yet - so this is really great to see her on youtube. There are some really great and talented western teachers out there - and actually they tend to be women - I am thinking of Pema Chodron, Ani TenzinPalmo, Robina Courtin and of couse Venerable chodron.

We are fortunate to have these women as well as many other Tibetan teachers available to us. We need to beware of any school or teacher who says "our way is the only way" or who for example slanders HH the Dali Lama

  • Great insights, thank you.

  • I like how she emphasizes, "to become a Buddha". I think Western Buddhism is being watered down as many people question whether it is indeed possible to become a Buddha, because most of the old masters from Tibet and the great siddhas from India are gone. And while I don't know if I could become a monastic as she has, I can certainly relate to the hollowness of the 'house, 9-5 job, kids, vacations, retire, play golf, die' narrative that is supposed to be the key to happiness for us.

  • hey where r u from? and are really going to nun or just wanna practice tibetan budhist?

  • @DeDraakAap

She never said she was better than that. She said she was different than the institutional role that was put forth for nuns. Not better but different.

  • Notice that the "interviewer" doesn't exist. ;-)

  • MHO :

how as a buddhist can she say "this is not me, I am better than that" ? she maybe is a teacher but then more a teacher in the teching about the mental illusions actually being true sense.

  • She is a great teacher

  • Classic Venerable Chodron yes. She teaches pure Dharma. She has a "gift". Not all teachers have the "gift". When I hear her teachings, when I see her teachings in "real", I smile. Always that one rare smile crosses my face, because she has such a warm gentle sense of humor in her teachings, one can not help but smile. She speaks in truth, she is truth. The mainstay of Tibetan Buddhist Nuns.

  • Thanks for posting this. I am excited to see her this Thursday.
