respond to the call for help with a call for help... on behalf of all the ordinary non techno folk out there who would like to use YouTube. How do we convert our camera files so they are smaller than 100 meg?

  • Update 2 years later! we now all use picasa and picasa web albums (free) and we keep our videos small as pos. We also have limited access to apple macs, and Imovie does a superb job, and then puts them on youtube for us. mega.

  • tibs - do you realize you just replied to a month-old post?

wennet - I understand your conversion frustrations. In my experience, you're stuck spending some money at some point. I'd recommend purchasing one of those open-source "freeware" programs b/c they are definitely cheaper than the big-name programs (like Adobe) and generally only take a tad bit more effort to learn.

Message me if you'd like to talk further... (Love your accent btw...yes, I'm from the US) ;)

  • thanks for the comment, I have tried a lot since I posted the reply to call for help, and I think you are right. Its not the money I mind it is all the time wasted trying things that won't work, and I thought someone out there in the ether would have a simple fix. I now realise no such thing exists. Also that there isn't a single solution for everyone. What do you use?

  • Thanks, so it sounds like I have quite a few jobs to doto get the file into the right format and then edit, and then compress.I keep looking for easy ways to do things and then I can show others here how to do it. We have a club where we share info. There just doesn't seem to be a single solution that will cope with the many different file types. Thanks for your suggestion, I will try it. cheers

  • just tried to open a vob file with virtual dub, wouldn't open it...couldn't see it at all.

  • tried loads of times to convert a wmv file into an mpg file with no success with SUPER. Will try VirtualDub tomorrow. Need an mpeg to play on our digital noticeboard in the village, it doesn't like the wmv format. SUPER has converted and compressed the MOV files superbly. They play great on the board with no significant loss of quality.

  • Old video but anyway...

    Download - quick and easy

  • virtual dub only!

  • just installed SUPER this morning, playing with it now, not easy but looking promising, will keep trying...will try virtual dub too. Tried lots of freeware cheapies but all demand payment in 30 days or only compress a portion of your file, good to find some that don't, thanks guys.

  • Okay.. Short: use a program called VirtualDub. That does most of what I need. Complex: What is a good compression scheme for the internet? I like xvid (the open source, though a little backwards, cousin to divx). Quality wise though, H.264 is the best. And the settings? Well, you'll just have to play with it for a few days and figure out the best.. Use a small snippet of a video file, and use different compression settings on it until you find a good balance of size per second, and quality.
