In this famous soliloquy, Hamlet (Ned Jolliffe) agonises over a heavy decision...to be or not to be? To leave things as they are or take action...and risk the chance of losing his life? Filmed, directed and edited by Richard Wilson.
@oscarcool40 yes, I have seen plenty of other plays. None make this terrible acting. It's words that are important, not jerking out in the scene. And I had thought well enough before I wrote. Perhaps you have some problems with assumptions about other people.
@grazusrytas well have you seen other plays? and other versions of them? it cannot be perfect since this is not the time when it was made you don't know how it was performed back then so thin k about what you say next time before you hate on other peoples work.
my god, that was terrible. don't distort the lines, that's the worst thing one could do to the art. Also, that long introduction at the beggining makes it boring to wait for the monologue,it's a little bit pompous. What's more - you do not say the lines but act, make effusive expressions, I advise you to take more concern about the lines, words, tone, pitch of the voice than making some kind of a performance out of classics. The most horrible thing is to uncunnily distort the original version.
This is amazing! I've seen 4 or 5 versions of Hamlet on film, and none of them actually FELT these words. I thought about making a short film of 'To Be' myself, but this says everything in actions AND feelings that I wanted. Please, if Ned Jolliffe has a distributed version of his version of Hamlet, I would LOVE to see it! If not, then this short video is a GEM in itself!!!!!
I didn't see anything special in this video, other than the effort of the director. The acting, though not bad, was stock at best. There was almost no scansion, leaving this beautiful iambically pentametric soliloquy to be performed as prose (the biggest Shakespeare no-no), and most of the shots just felt too contrived and unmotivated. Not bad, but not great. Certainly better than many "to be" recanters on youtube.
You`re exactly right. Hard to believe that, though delaying a spiritually-commanded murder of one man, he`d be so close as this to murdering the entire universe. It`s almost certainly contemplative, slightly grieving, with a note of dry irony. But yes, good acting. The other way is a challenge too though.
