A cover of Battles' "Atlas."
All instruments + production by Peter Sobot.
January 23, 2010

Why'd I do it? I had to know how Battles did it. Samples, loops, and putting a Digitech Whammy in places it shouldn't ever be. And I wanted to see if I could even run 8 instances of Guitar Rig on my MacBook. (I could.)

  • Hey there! Great work! i'd love if you can answer a few questions:

-What does the BASS guitar do in this song?

-What exact effects are used to transform the voice?

  • @fontoledo The bass is actually pretty boring if I remember correctly - it was mostly just octaves on D with the occasional accent.

And on the voice, I'm just putting it through a Digitech Whammy pedal (well, not a real one) - emulated in Native Instruments' Guitar Rig 4. I have it hooked up to an analog sequencer so it automatically sweeps the pitch by a 5th on every half note, and in the "verse," it just adds a 4th on top of my voice.

  • @mynamewastakenagain from watching battles live, i'm pretty sure that during the verse, tyondai sings the fifth intervals with his actual voice and only modulates the octave with his pedal (an ehx hog). so he sings 8-4 7-3 6-2 5-1 but it sounds like the 8, 7, 6, and 5 are up an octave because of his pitch bending. during the chorus i think he just has a fifth above his voice. his range is pretty high. cool cover though, not many people cover battles and i like to see it.

  • @WOOT1234567890 I tried singing the 5ths with my voice and pushing them up an octave, but it was way too high - I'm almost certain that Ty is singing just the root notes (D, Db, B, A) then pushing them up a 5th on the beat with a pedal. (didn't know the HOG could do that kinda pitch bending though, cool) And yeah, during the "choruses" it's just a 5th above, constantly. His voice is pretty high to begin with. Really fun stuff, though. :P
